LA BONELLI DISPELS FOG VYING WITH ‘TRAVIATA’

"Last night was certainly no fit night for a girl with an active case of consumption to be out breathing in the dark night air. But Olivia Bonelli did not let a little thing like that stop her….and delivered herself of one of the most glittering first acts of Verdi’s La Traviata that has been seen hereabouts in quite some time. Her voice is clear as crystal, pure, and right smack in the center of things, not only in intonation, but in phrasing, in style, in shading, in finesse, and all the rest that goes to make for a fine singer. The audience, sensing the fine performance rose scene after scene, in the weeks’ most enthusiastic applause."

Paul Hume, The Washington Post, Washington, D.C., July 19, 1962

LA TRAVIATA WINS BRAVOS OF 2000

"As Violetta, Olivia Bonelli not only possesses a lyric soprano voice of wide range and purest coloratura quality, but proved to be an actress of recognized ability. Her beauty of voice, figure and regal bearing were communicated aurally and visually to the members of the large audience…marking her as one of the most promising young sopranos of today’s lyric theater."

Times Union, Albany, New York, November 26, 1958

A SINGER OF GREAT PROMISE

"Olivia Bonelli sang Micaela last night in Carmen at the Carter Barron Amphitheater, and stopped the show with her third act aria. She is a young singer, with the manner, vocal and dramatic, of a patrician. Her singing is etched in clear lines of the most elegant sound, and her French enunciation was the model other members of the cast might well have followed. When she was on the stage there was an aura about the whole thing. I can think of a whole raft of roles in which I hope to hear her in the very near future. The evening brought us Olivia Bonelli as a new artist of great promise and for that we are grateful."

Paul Hume, The Washington Post, Washington D.C., July 9, 1959

CARMEN AT NEW YORK CITY CENTER OPERA

"The New York City Opera’s revival of “Carmen” this season has proved to be one of it’s more successful ventures. Yesterday afternoon the opera drew a capacity audience which heard three singers in roles new to them at the center....Olivia Bonelli sang Micaela for the first time (in this house)and did so with style and a fine-grained spinning tone."

BUTTERFLY AT THE ARTS CENTER

"...the performance ranked with the finest. In the title role of Madama Butterfly, Olivia Bonelli, a young lyric soprano, proved capable both of the most delicate shadings and dramatic intensity."

BOHEME IS PRESENTED AT THE CITY OPERA

"The New York City Opera likes to open its season with novelties, which it did on Thursday night with works by Stravinsky and Honegger. Then it slips right back into the groove. So last night there was some Puccini - "La Boheme" to be exact - and the opera season may really be said to have begun.

Two of the company's singers were appearing in their roles for the first time, Olivia Bonelli as Mimi and John Craig as Rodolfo....Miss Bonelli was singing under the handicap of a head cold, which was noticeable in an occasional lack of control of notes in the lower register. On the whole, however, her performance was lovely in tone and affecting in spirit."

Raymond Ericson, New York Times, October 5, 1963
